Orchid is a widespread family of flowering plants which is well know for its beautiful flower blooms. It is an amazing journey into the flowery world of Orchid at the 13th Asia Pacific Orchid Conference 2019. Meet the participant from Australia, China, Ecuador, France, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United States.

Orchid Landscape Display and Competition

The Orchid Landscape Display Competition is highlights for public visits as amazing display of Orchids with elements of their own national culture had made it a place for “cultural exchange through orchids”. Participant from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Brunei, Hong Kong and China all came here to show their creativity in mastering and showcase their Orchid Landscape designs.

Each participating display consist of 50% orchid plant and 50% non-flowering plants. The setup of the display started on 20 July till 22 July 2019, and the judging of the display is held on Tuesday 23 July 2019. They are judged on Creativity, Technique and Deliberation, Quality and Diversity, Balance and Harmony and Theme Consistency.

The display by the Singapore featuring both a traditional wooden house and the modern ferris wheel with glowing blue light. It is a fusion of both worlds – the old and the new.

Over the years, Singapore’s unique cultures evolves. In history, two hundred years ago, homes are made from timber and nipah, children play simple games and life revolved around the Kampongs. Today, most of Singaporean dwell in towering apartments and live a fast paced life.

The display by team from Myanmar showcase their unique culture and lifestyle. Children with traditional Myanmar costume play in wide ground of lush greens and beautiful mountain ridge. Agriculture is still the main economy of Myanmar.

The display by the team from Laos featuring a bamboo wall with hanging orchids. The color of the orchid display is very consistent of majority white orchids and some purple orchids.

The Orchid Landscape by Dewan Pengurus Daerah Perhimpunan Anggrek Indonesia from Indonesia – Provensi Papua, featuring the path to tropical jungle of orchid.

The display by the Indonesian team featuring a deep forest of orchid with low hanging branches. It tells the forest diversity of Indonesia.

The Orchid Landscape by Indonesia Orchid Society of Malang, featuring dolphin in the sea of orchid.

The display by the team from Malang, a city in East Jave, Indonesia, featuring leaping dolphins in the sea of orchids. Malang is famous for its Dolphin watch.

The Orchid Landscape by Philippines Orchid Society, featuring orchid garden of the Philippines.

The display by team from Philippines showcase their traditional culture and beautiful terrace agriculture which is known as Banaue Rice Terraces.  The statues are presumably “Bulol”, which is known as rice fertility deities of the Philippines.

The display by team from Hong Kong ingeniously incorporate various Chinese elements such as the Chinese Partitions, ceramic potted plants, bamboo fence and Chinese paper umbrellas.

The Orchid Landscape by Damrong Orchids from Thailand, featuring the orchid tree. This is the Grand Champion of Orchid Landscape Display Competition.

The Grand Champion of the Orchid Landscape Display Competition is a display by Damrong Orchids from Thailand. The display featuring a towering withered tree with orchid growing around the branches and roots.  The ground is covered with garden moss, and there is a miniature water feature within the tree. There is a good contrast between the green leaves and the pretty flowers.

The display by team from Vietnam feature a cool countryside with a simple rest house with a hanging rope bed.

The Orchid Landscape by Chiangmai Orchid Society from Thailand, featuring umbrellas and the orchids.

The display by the team from Thailand featuring paper umbrellas and trees with orchids. There is many varieties of orchids are blend into the harmonious mix.

The Orchid Landscape by Ngoc Tu Orchid Co. Ltd. from Vietnam, featuring the straw hut and the orchid gardens.

Orchids match well with the straw house and their courtyard gardens. The display by team from Vietnam had match their simple country life into the orchid landscape.

The Orchid Landscape by the Indonesia Orchids Community, featuring the tropical rainforest of orchids and hornbills.

The display from the team from Indonesia featuring a Rainforest with orchids, but with extravagant elements of the native forest. They includes the features of indigenous people with traditional costume, wooden boats, several hornbills, clear water lakes and a tall waterfall. It match well with the topic “Cultural Exchange through Orchids”.

The display by team from Thailand featuring a wall of Orchid forest and a small water feature at the center. Dangling roots looks like vines hanging from the branches. The darkness of the waters gave great contrast to the orchids.

The Orchid Landscape by the Taiwan Orchid Growers Association, featuring the orchid and the stone garden.

The huge red word on a stone like wall is actually a Traditional Chinese word for “orchid”. There is rows of orchid in front of it.

The display by the Taiwan team also feature in a promotional elements of 23rd World Orchid Conference that will be host in Taichung Taiwan in year 2020.

The display by the Singapore team is based on a fall garden with a bamboo gazebo, floors filled with thick collection of fallen leaves and a stone path into the garden.

The Orchid Landscape by the Wildroot Tropicana Garden from the Philippines, featuring the tropical orchid garden.

The display by the team from Philippines wisely use the sense of space by making a semi curve display for their orchids. Although less than half of their floor space is occupy by orchids, but their focus is very distinct. Simple and elegant.

The display by the Johor team featuring a stony walk path that split their Orchid forest diagonally into equal half. It was placed diagonally to maximize the straight length of stony path (you only have 8 meters x 4 meters to be used for display) and lead you to a feeling of walking into a deep jungle.

The Orchid Landscape by the Borneo Orchid Society of Sabah, featuring the orchid tree with various stuffed wildlife.

In Sabah, coconut had become the new source of income for farmers due to demand of downstream products. Using coconut husk in their display tells the tale of importance of coconut in their culture and economy. A closer look you may notice some small stuffed animals including a clouded leopard and a grey monkey. It signify Sabah focus in their preservation of their wildlife.

The Orchid Landscape by Jasmina Florist and Landscaping co. of Brunei, featuring the malay style backyard orchid garden.

The display from Brunei brought in elements of the Malay culture into the mix. Small gazebo with a table decorated with drinks, and a garden with white wooden fence and Malay oil lamp.

The Orchid Landscape by the Taipei Orchid Society of Taiwan, featuring the orchid garden with colorful umbrellas.

Paper umbrella and hand fans are part of the Chinese culture. They are also matching well with blooming orchids. In this display they choose a harmonious match of green,white and purple orchid flowers.

The Orchid Landscape by the Zhangzhou Luckyshine Horticulture of China, featuring the Chinese orchid garden with lanterns and bamboo.

You can connects orchids with culture to make it more appealing. In the display by China, they add in elements of Chinese including bamboo, red lantern and a pair of couplet. At the background is a modern stadium in china with moving LED projection that signify the modernization of China.

The Orchid Landscape by the Okinawa Churashima Foundation of Japan, featuring the orchid on bamboo.

Bamboo is an essential object in Japanese culture due to its feel of vitality from its straight growing posture and it enjoys the harmony with colorful orchids. The orchid is placed on the bamboo of different height gets good contrast with the ground of white and green.

The Individual Orchid Plant Competition

The individual orchid competition is where individual orchid plants are competing for the Best in Section, Best Hybrid in show, Best Species in show and Grand Champion. The registration of plants starts on 21 July 2019 and the judging is held on Tuesday 23 July 2019.

It is amazing to see all different kinds of orchid here. Each of them is unique.

All the award winning orchids are placed at the front display, including the Grand Champion of the Individual Orchid Competition.

Orchids are amazing flowering plants. They produce amazing clusters of flowers with complexity of colors and texture that never fails to amaze people. Judging an orchid is even harder, and hence they are separated into different classes for competition purposes.
