Tasik Biru – The blue lake at Kuching Sarawak

The Signage of Tasik Biru, Since 1820

Tasik Biru literally translated to Blue Lake in English. Tasik Biru located at 5 minutes from Bau township, which is around 35km (45 minutes) from the Kuching City center. It is accessible via road connection from Kuching-Bau road. It is also not far from another two attraction of Bau Township – namely the Wind Cave and the Fairy Cave.

The name of blue lake was coined as the featured appearance of the calm and deep lake that reflects the blue sky onto the lake, making it appears blue in a sunny day. The blue lake have sharp and deep edges. It had a good contrast with the surrounding greeneries and please the viewing eyes. At certain days, the lake appears more turquoise than blue.

Previously was known as Tai Parit Lake in the 1970’s, is a huge 6 hectare, 91 meters deep man-made lake as a result of gold mining quarry activity by the Borneo Company in 1898.

According to the signage at the main attraction, it stated it was created since 1820. The gold mining operation was ceased in 1921 due to flooding and was restarted in the 1980’s till 2000, before It was open for public as a tourism hot spot in 21 April 2001.

Currently the hot spot had been well equipped with jogging paths, parking lots, shop lots, food stalls, toilets and resting benches.

Visitors might be warn not to drink or eat fishes from this lake due to possible arsenic contaminants as a result of previous mining operations that exposed naturally occurring arsenic compounds that is strongly related to gold deposits.

However, due to its calm waters and huge open water body, it is still suitable for water sports such as rafting, kayak, and other water games.

Visitors can have a stroll around the lake and have breathtaking view of the lake from different platform available around the lake. Safety is a concern and children must accompany by adults as risk of falling over the edge is high if get too close. The edge of the lake is steep and deep.

Trees provide good shades from the hot sun and garden bench is available around the lake. Couples love to visit this park.

A floating platform allows visitors to get closer to the lake. Visitors can get nice Panoramas from this platform.
